New South Wales
New South Wales (abbreviated as NSW) is Australia's most populous state, located in the south-east of the country, north of Victoria and south of Queensland. It was founded in 1788 and originally comprised much of the Australian mainland, as well as Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island.
Queensland
Queensland is a state of Australia, in the north-east of the country. It is the second largest state by area and the third largest state by population.
The capital and largest city is Brisbane. Other major regional centers include the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Townsville, Rockhampton, Mackay, Cairns, Toowoomba, and Mount Isa.
Tasmania
The island of Tasmania, an Australian state, is located 200 km south of the eastern side of the continent, being separated from it by Bass Strait. Tasmania promotes itself as the Natural State owing to its large, and relatively unspoiled natural environment.
Victoria
Victoria is a state located in the south-eastern corner of Australia. It is the smallest mainland state in area but the most densely populated and urbanized. Victoria began in the 1830s as a farming community. The discovery of gold in 1851 transformed it into a leading industrial and commercial centre.
Western Australia
Western Australia is Australia's largest state in area, covering the western third of the mainland, and is bordered by South Australia and the Northern Territory. It is, after the Sakha Republic in Russia, the second largest subnational entity (statoid) in the world.
Northern Territory
The Northern Territory is a federal territory of Australia. The capital city is Darwin; the other two sizable settlements are Alice Springs and Katherine. Residents of the Northern Territory are often known simply as 'Territorians'.
Australian Capital Territory
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is the capital territory of the Commonwealth of Australia and its smallest self-governing territory. It is an inland enclave in New South Wales, situated in bushland.
South Australia
The state's origins were unique in Australia as a freely-settled, planned British province rather than a convict settlement. Official settlement began on 28 December 1836 when the state was proclaimed at The Old Gum Tree by Governor Hindmarsh.
